What is HIFU?
HIFU stands for High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound. It is a non-surgical, non-invasive treatment that uses focused ultrasound energy to stimulate collagen production and skin tightening in the face and neck.
It is considered a lunchtime facelift because it provides lifting and tightening effects without surgery or significant downtime. Treatment typically takes 30-40min.
The ultrasound energy targets deeper layers of skin (SMAS layer) that can’t be reached by other non-invasive treatments like lasers. This stimulates new collagen growth for long-term natural lifting effects.
Ultrasound energy delivers heat to target 2 areas: the subcutaneous layer at 3mm and the Superficial Muscular Aponeurotic System (SMAS) layer at 4.5mm. This ultrasonic wave will reinforce the existing collagen, as well as stimulate new collagen.
How Does HIFU Work?
SMAS is a thin, band-like muscle which covers the lower two-thirds of the face as well as the neck. As we age, SMAS will loosen which results in sagging face.
Treatment of saggy face aims at tightening of SMAS. In surgical facelift, surgeon will remove a section of excess SMAS tissue and skin, followed by tightening and suturing.
However, for non-invasive facelift, we use HIFU to heat up SMAS layer with thermal-coagulation effect (heat-induced clotting/denaturation of tissue). This action will stimulate collagen and tightening of SMAS, results in face lifting effect.
Key Benefits of HIFU
- Non-invasive and Non-surgical
- Targeted Treatment
- Safe and Proven Technology
- Natural-Looking Results
- Long-lasting Effects
- Minimal Downtime
- Suitable for Various Skin Types
Where Can HIFU Treat?
HIFU is employed in various treatments, including facial and neck lifts and body contouring. Its versatility and effectiveness make it a popular choice for individuals seeking noticeable and natural-looking results without the need for surgery.
Saggy Face/Jowl Fat
Defines jawline by lifting jowls and tightening loose skin.
Face Slimming
Lifts sagging cheeks and smooths laugh lines and wrinkles.
Laugh Line & Marionette Line
Softens deep laugh lines and wrinkles around the mouth.
Droopy Eyelid
Can help lift hooded eyelids and tighten loose skin around the eyes.
Double Chin
Focus energy at excess fat area may reduce the fat and tigthen skin.
Neck Lines
Tightens crepey skin on the neck for a smoother, younger looking profile.
What to Expect After Treatment?
The optimum results occur after 1 month as your body naturally regenerates collagen and elastin. Collagen provides strength to skin structure while elastin helps skin to resume their shape after stretching. Together, they help to counteract saggy and wrinkly skin by providing rigidity and elasticity.
Difference Between Ulthera and HIFU?
Ulthera is the brand name of the machine that delivers HIFU technology. Ulthera is the first generation machine for aesthetic use. Ultherapy simply means HIFU treatment by using the Ulthera machine. Both treatments uses ultrasound energy for facelifting. Generally speaking, ultherapy is a stronger version of HIFU.
Newer generation of HIFU machine such as Utracel Q+ is able to deliver the ultrasound wave faster e.g. 400 shots in 15 minutes, compared to traditional HIFU which requires much longer time. More importantly, it gives similar results with much less discomfort.
FAQ for HIFU Treatment
How does High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) treatment work?
HIFU delivers focused ultrasound energy to specific depths beneath the skin’s surface, stimulating collagen production and promoting tissue tightening. This non-invasive procedure lifts and firms targeted areas, providing natural-looking results.
How long does the treatment take, and is it painful?
The duration varies based on the treatment area. Sessions typically last 30 minutes to 1 hour. While discomfort levels vary among individuals, most experience minimal pain. Some may feel a slight tingling or warmth during the procedure.
When will I see results after receiving the treatment?
Results are often noticeable immediately, with further improvements occurring over several weeks as collagen production continues. Full results typically become apparent within 2 to 3 months.
Is there any downtime for the treatment?
The Treatment is known for minimal downtime. Some individuals may experience mild redness or swelling, but this typically resolves within a few hours to a day. Patients can resume regular activities immediately after the procedure.
How many sessions are required to see results?
While a single session can provide visible results, the number of sessions depends on individual goals and the specific area being treated. A personalized treatment plan can be discussed during a consultation.
Is HIFU safe?
The treatment is considered a safe and FDA-approved procedure. The technology has been used for years in various medical applications, demonstrating a strong safety profile when performed by qualified practitioners.
How long does the treatment results last?
Results can last up to 1-2 years, depending on individual factors such as skin elasticity, age, and lifestyle. Maintenance sessions can prolong the benefits.
Who is suitable for HIFU?
HIFU is suitable for individuals with mild to moderate skin laxity who seek non-surgical skin tightening. A consultation with a qualified practitioner can determine suitability based on individual needs.
HIFU vs Laser: Which one should I choose?
The choice between HIFU and laser depends on specific goals and skin concerns. HIFU primarily targets deep tissue layers for lifting, while laser treatments address surface concerns. Consulting with a skincare professional can help determine the most suitable option.
