High power with ultra-short pulse in Pico laser will cause the target tissues to rapidly expand and subsequently be destroyed. Pico laser in resurfacing mode destroys the scar tissue from within (at subcutaneous layer), compared to traditional resurfacing laser which ‘destroys’ the scar tissues throughout all the layers. This explains why Pico laser has a shorter downtime.

Fractional CO2 Laser

CO2 laser targets water within the skin cells. The laser energy will heat up the targeted scar tissue and cause cell regeneration and repair.

CO2 laser, developed in 1964, was one of the first entries of all laser systems. It produces a wavelength of 10,600 nm which is the longest of all lasers in the market. Longer wavelength means deeper penetration into the skin.

Fractional CO2 laser is subsequently introduced for aesthetic use, especially for treating acne scars and pores. Fractional means the laser beam splits further into multiple smaller beams to leave some normal tissues intact in between, which will serve as healing spots to enhance the recovery speed. With fractional CO2 laser, the downtime and safety profile improve significantly.

Microneedling RF

Besides Pico and CO2 laser, microneedling RF such as Morpheus8 and Secret RF are good alternative machines to treat acne scars and pores.

They penetrate deeper into the skin (up to 4mm for Morpheus8 and 3mm for Secret RF) by using microneedle, without causing overheating of the skin surface, hence carrying a lower risk of PIH (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation).

Darker skin types or pigmented skin should avoid CO2 laser and consider microneedling RF instead.
