What are Droopy Eyelids?
Droopy eyelids, also known as ptosis, refer to a condition where one or both upper eyelids sag lower than usual, partially or completely covering the eye. This drooping can range from mild—where it may not impact vision—to severe cases where it can obstruct the line of sight, leading to vision impairment. The condition can affect one or both eyes and may be present from birth (congenital ptosis) or develop later in life due to various causes.
What Causes of Droopy Eyelid?
As we age, production of collagen and elastin will slow down. This results in skin laxity including around the eye area.
Over time, the eyebrows progressively descend due to a combination of factors such as gravitational effects, muscle movements, and loss of volume in the temples and upper face.
Gravity exerts a constant downward pull on the brow tissue, skin, and muscles. Repetitive facial expressions like frowning and squinting also encourage the brow to slowly settle lower.
Volume loss in the upper face contributes as well. As we age, the temples hollow and the tail of the brow loses definition. This causes the arched brow structure to weaken and drop. The brow fat pads also diminish with age, reducing support.
The descensus of brow tissue, skin, and muscle leads to an appearance of tiredness, sadness, or anger even when the face is relaxed. Hooding of the upper eyelid also occurs as the brow droops, obscuring the eyes.
This heavy brow gives the illusion of a flatter forehead and hooded eyelids. Hence overall contributes to a tired, aged appearance.
Apart from natural aging, droopy eyelids can also be caused by other factors such as sun exposure, weight fluctuations and excessive eye rubbing.
What Are The Key Symptoms of Droopy Eyelids?
- Heavy or Sagging Eyelids: The most noticeable symptom is the eyelid itself hanging lower than normal, which can make the eyes appear tired or asymmetrical.
- Vision Obstruction: In severe cases, the droopy eyelid may cover part of the pupil, impairing vision, especially in children and older adults.
- Head Tilting or Brow Raising: Some people unconsciously lift their brows or tilt their heads back to improve their field of vision.
