Follicular unit extraction (FUE), also known as follicular transfer, is one of the methods of obtaining hair follicles for hair transplantation. It is an effective hair loss treatment done by harvesting hair grafts from the back of scalp and transplanting them to hair loss areas.
On average, it takes 8 to 10 hours, depending on the complexity and number of grafts. For hair graft not more than 2500, it can be done in one session.
The number of grafts depends on the severity of hair loss condition so it varies from patient to patient. It is recommended to have at least 1500 grafts to see significant improvement. If severe, one may require up to 3000 grafts.
It is not painful after adequately numbed with local anesthesia (lignocaine). After the procedure, you may take simple pain killer when necessary.
Immediately after the procedure, you should plan to go home and rest (minimal activity) until the next morning. Temporary swelling at forehead may occur around 2-3 days following procedure but it will not leave any permanent mark/scar.
It is advisable to avoid heavy physical activity for the first week after the hair transplant. You can resume light physical activities or return to office after 3 days. It is recommended to avoid sun exposures on the scalp for 2 weeks. Also, avoid swimming pool, steam rooms and saunas for 1 month after the procedure.
The recovery and hair regrowth process varies individually. Generally, one can expect to see natural and healthy hair growth from 6 to 12 months.
